VP - Much Ado About Nothing?

Since we have a media driven Presidential Campaign, we have to have a topic thrust in our laps exhaustively every day. The candidates at the top of the 2 major tickets have been chosen, and there is a long way until the Conventions, so what could topic could fill a lot of airwaves, newprint and webspace? How about who gets to run for the most frustrating job in America? The Vice-President is just 'a heart beat away', but in most cases is like the roller derby team member who slingshots a teammate to the front then stays in the pack waiting for them to come around again.

There are so many names that will come up. Names you have never heard before. Names you will never hear again.

John McCain - the only person he can pick who can help his ticket is Mitt Romney. That is the smartest pick because it puts some states in play in New England as well as Michigan and helps the states surrounding Utah that Obama may pick off. I have read that his selection would tick off the Republican Right. If McCain picks a conservative (other than Mike Huckabee), he will lose everyone in the middle he is trying to get. My guess is he picks someone else who is under 60 that doesn't upset anyone.

Barack Obama - a few interesting choices. Mark Warner's name is rising to the top as is Evan Bayh. Jim Webb is the name that is starting to gain a lot of traction right now. Hillary? For many reasons mentioned in previous blogs, no. Obama should pick someone he can team with when he is president and just not upset anyone with during the election.

The reality is that the VP choice is a bigger deal before they are selected. Usually, a presidential nominee can only cause problems and rarely makes much of a difference in the outcome of the election, regardless of what all the pundits spend time talking about.
